Happy Sunday, friend. As you prepare for worship this morning, let’s take a moment of quiet to invite God’s presence into your awareness today.
15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. 16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
Hebrews 13:15-16
What does a sacrifice of praise look like? Does our praise embody any amount of sacrifice?
Is what we do on a Sunday morning a pleasing sacrifice to God?
Praise that is sacrificial probably has us sacrificing things like our time, our energy, our pride and our preferences. Obviously, it takes some of our time, but are we also giving it our best? Showing up well rested and prepared? It takes energy, but are we really giving it our 100% on Sunday morning, laying down any pride that may hinder us from worshiping with our whole hearts and bodies? Are we laying down our preferences, choosing songs that aren’t necessarily our favorites, but ones that tell the story of Jesus. Ones that magnify Him? Ones that speak to our congregation?
There’s so much more that we could dive into as far as the condition of our hearts when we go into a Sunday morning, but I think you get the point. None of this is about us. It’s about laying ourselves down as the sacrifice—giving our whole selves in praise and worship.
I can’t help but think of Psalm 15, where David says this:
1 Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord?
Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?
2 Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right,
speaking the truth from sincere hearts.
Let's pray.
Father, may our praises be pleasing to You today. Help us to not hold back. To not be reserved in our worship, but to worship You extravagantly today. To lay down our pride, our sin, or whatever restrains us and to give You our all. Forgive us for the times when we haven’t presented a sacrifice in this manner. Break down those walls in our hearts and in the hearts of our congregations. That we would worship You with our hearts, our minds and our bodies today and always. We love You and thank You for the most extravagant gift of sending Jesus to save us. We could never run out of reasons to praise You for this one act alone. You are so good to us. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
