Happy Sunday, friend. As you prepare for worship this morning, let’s take a moment of quiet to invite God’s presence into your awareness today.
One of my very favorite hymns is Near the Cross, which was written by the prolific hymnist Fanny Crosby in 1869. The words are a powerful picture.
Jesus, keep me near the cross,
There a precious fountain;
Free to all, a healing stream,
Flows from Calv'ry's mountain.
In the cross, in the cross
Be my glory ever,
Till my ransomed soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.
It’s verse three that I want to focus on today:
Near the cross! O lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day
With its shadow o'er me
I think these are words we could pray daily. The idea of having the scenes of the cross in my mind and walking in the shadow of the cross would leave me living a life overflowing with gratitude, as well as grace and compassion for those around me. It leaves me remembering just how much I’ve been forgiven and how much forgiveness I owe to the people around me.
As we lead today, let’s lead with the cross in mind. Not just the gift that came from it, but the dark and the pain. Let the gravity of that fuel not only your gratitude, but also be a reminder of the importance of what we do as we lead.
Let’s pray. God, there could never be adequate words to declare our thanks for who You are and what You’ve done for us. Our greatest efforts on earth could never be enough to earn it. Thank You for choosing us anyway. Help us to walk in the shadow of the cross today, covered by the grace and mercy brought to us there, and to walk in the calling it also brought to us to love like You did. Thank You for Jesus. It’s in His name we pray. Amen.
