Happy Sunday, friend.  As you prepare for worship this morning, let’s take a moment of quiet to invite God’s presence into your awareness today.

I think sometimes we make church too difficult.  Especially as leaders, it’s easy to complicate things.  To get caught up in the latest trends.  To try to be bigger and better.  To try to “keep up” with what we see going on in other churches.” In thinking about this, I couldn’t help but recall Jesus’ words to Peter after the resurrection.

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter,

“Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

-John 21:15-17 (NIV)

Our jobs, first and foremost, are to take care of the sheep.  To feed them with solid truth from the Word of God.  To tend to them when they need it.  To love them always.  It’s not to provide them with more programs, or events, or better musicians, or better lighting, or better buildings.  There’s not necessarily anything wrong with these things, but if they take away from our true purpose, we’ve lost sight of the goal.

As you go about your church building today, look for the sheep who need some tending.  Pray over them as you sing.  Show them the love of the Father.  Don’t let the busy-ness of the morning keep you from the people.  Don’t let your personality type keep you from the people.  Don’t let your fear keep you from the people.  Ask the Holy Spirit to send you to where you’re needed today.

Check your priorities.  Are they ordered in a way that puts His people first?

Let’s pray.

Father, we fall so short sometimes.  It’s never our intention, but help us to see when we need course correction.  Help us to find ways to serve our people well with the callings You’ve given us.  We do love You, God.  Help us to care for Your sheep.  It’s in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
