Tune My Heart, Episode 30

Happy Sunday, friend. As you prepare for worship this morning, let’s take a moment of quiet to invite God’s presence into your awareness today.
What does it look like to surrender? I was in a session this past week where John Ortberg was speaking and he said something along the lines of “It’s easy for us to confuse surrender in worship to true surrender to God’s will.”
I think we all know what surrender in worship feels like. Sometimes we’re definitely more surrendered, often depending on how focused our hearts are or, on the contrary, how distracted we are. I’m reminded of a Sunday recently where our first service felt great to me. I genuinely felt connected to the Father. In between services, however, someone dumped some really heavy news on me, just moments before I needed to be on stage. Trying to surrender my will and my control of the situation in the moment was very difficult. My heart was supremely distracted and, as hard as I tried, I couldn’t shake the distraction.
But surrendering in worship is different than the day-to-day surrendering of our will to His.
What does it look like to actively surrender, moment by moment, to what God would have for us? I wonder how many of us regularly even pray for God to show us His will during regular times of life. We’re quick to pray that when faced with tough decisions, but what about the everyday, mundane things in our lives?
I wanted to just read some verses over us today that might help us to continue to draw our hearts and minds to the will of God. I’m reminded of verses like Psalm 46:10. There’s a reason I have this one tattooed on my arm.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
-Psalm 46:10
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
-James 4:7-10
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
-Matthew 6:33
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
-Matthew 7:21
Let’s pray.
God,
First, would You guard our hearts today. Help them to stay focused on You, especially as we worship. Let our worship be an authentic expression from our hearts. Would you also help us to see areas that we haven’t surrendered to You. Help us to remember to seek You and Your will each and every day. Father, we couldn’t do any day without You and Your power. Help us to not forget that and what a gift Your spirit is to us. We don’t want to be the ones You don’t know when we get to the end of our lives. Thank You for the patience You show us. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
