Happy Sunday, friend. As you prepare for worship this morning, let’s take a moment of quiet to invite God’s presence into your awareness today.
We’re in a study of Psalm 119 right now. It’s the longest book of the Bible and it truly focuses on the importance and value of the Word of the Lord. If you’ve missed the past two weeks, you can always go back and listen to them. Today’s text is Psalm 119:17-24:
ג Gimel
17 Be good to your servant while I live,
that I may obey your word.
18 Open my eyes that I may see
wonderful things in your law.
19 I am a stranger on earth;
do not hide your commands from me.
20 My soul is consumed with longing
for your laws at all times.
21 You rebuke the arrogant, who are accursed,
those who stray from your commands.
22 Remove from me their scorn and contempt,
for I keep your statutes.
23 Though rulers sit together and slander me,
your servant will meditate on your decrees.
24 Your statutes are my delight;
they are my counselors.
Verse 18 is one that I often pray before I begin to read the Bible: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” I think it invites God’s presence, even more, to join us as we read and for His Spirit to show us what we need to see. To illuminate the text in ways and places where we might need conviction or correction or encouragement.
But I think this entire chunk of scripture here could be easily turned into a prayer that we all need. Let me pray these paraphrased words over us today:
Father, You have been so good to us our whole lives and we know You will continue to be.
Would You open our eyes to what You need us to see in your Word and in the world You’ve created. Help us to never forget that this world is not our home and to look to You always for what is right and true. Would you stir in us a deep desire for Your Word and Your law. A fire that can’t be quenched. We know You rebuke those who stray from Your laws. Would You do that for us, too? Show us where we have strayed. Correct us in Your love.
Whatever hardship and criticism we may face, help us to stay focused on You and Your Word. Help us to truly learn to love and delight in the counsel of Your Word and Your Spirit. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
