Happy Sunday, friend.  As you prepare for worship this morning, let’s take a moment of quiet to invite God’s presence into your awareness today.

As we continue our study of Psalm 119 and it’s focus on the importance and value of the Word of the Lord, let’s read the next section, Daleth, verses 25-32.

ד Daleth

25 I am laid low in the dust;

preserve my life according to your word.

26 I gave an account of my ways and you answered me;

 teach me your decrees.

27 Cause me to understand the way of your precepts,

that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds.

28 My soul is weary with sorrow;

strengthen me according to your word.

29 Keep me from deceitful ways;

be gracious to me and teach me your law.

30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;

I have set my heart on your laws.

31 I hold fast to your statutes, Lord;

do not let me be put to shame.

32 I run in the path of your commands,

 for you have broadened my understanding.

Last week, David asked God this: “Open my eyes that I might see wonderful things in your law.”

This week, he prays, “Cause me to understand the way of your precepts,” “Teach me your law” and then he ends the section with “…for you have broadened my understanding.”

Sometimes we sit and read these Psalms, assuming they were written in one setting.  There are times like this, where the text makes you think these beginning phrases are prayers, and the ending phrases feel more like time has passed and God has answered the prayer.

Another thing he asks for is “preserve my lifestrengthen me according to your word.”

The Enduring Word commentary says,  “According to Your word shows us that God uses His word in bringing revival. Works that claim to be revival can be measured according to His word.”

If you’re in a place of needing revival in your own heart, let’s take this encouragement here and start with the Word, even with these prayers of David, that God would open our eyes, preserve our lives and strengthen us.  That He would bring us revival, according to His Word.

Revival is a word that we hear tossed around church.  You might have heard “This church needs revival” or “This world needs revival.”  And I think those things are both probably true.  Who wouldn’t want a fresh fire and revelation of who God is? But in my experience, we’re waiting on God to make that happen, not necessarily doing our own part to seek revival.  Maybe revival is what we get when we recommit our lives fully to His Word.  When we can truly say we delight in His Word and His laws.

Maybe our challenge for this week as worship leaders, church leaders or even just as Christians, is to ask ourselves if we’re really committed to His Word.  If we want revival in our churches, maybe it starts right here, with us.

Let’s pray.

God, Your Word is so illuminating.  Shedding light on how good You are and how easily we can stray from Your will for us.  God, I do believe revival needs to happen in our land, but would you start in our own hearts.  Would you draw us to Your Word like never before and open our hearts to really let it change us.  Would You open our eyes every time we read Your Word to be able to see and understand what You want for us.  I pray that we really could say that we delight in Your Word.  Help us to never take it for granted.  Be with us as we lead and worship today.  Keep our eyes fixed on You.  It’s in Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.
