Happy Sunday, friend. As you prepare for worship this morning, let’s take a moment of quiet to invite God’s presence into your awareness today.
ח Heth
57 You are my portion, Lord;
I have promised to obey your words.
58 I have sought your face with all my heart;
be gracious to me according to your promise.
59 I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes.
60 I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.
61 Though the wicked bind me with ropes,
I will not forget your law.
62 At midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous laws.
63 I am a friend to all who fear you,
to all who follow your precepts.
64 The earth is filled with your love, Lord;
teach me your decrees.
We’ve talked about how much Psalm 119 focuses on the value and importance of God’s Word. In this little section, we see some of the fruit of that. We see that as a result of studying God’s Word and “seeking His face,” David has studied his own life and changed his ways to follow God’s commands. It says,
59 I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes.
60 I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.
It’s easy to read the Word of God, but to actually study it and allow it to change us can be a different story. This is a beautiful picture of David allowing the Word to convict him and then changing his ways to be in line with what God has asked of him. This is the real value and importance of God’s Word—that we would allow it to change us where we need to be so that we can look more and more like Jesus. I love that he included this little insight into his own life. He even says he will not delay to obey God’s commands. Sometimes that’s more our story. We read the Word and are convicted but we want to wait until it’s more convenient to actually follow through. Does this sound familiar to you?
David follows this up with, once again, thanking God for His laws. I don’t know about you, but I want to have a heart like David’s.
Let’s pray.
God, You are so good to us. Thank You for giving us Your Word to guide our lives and direct our steps. Would You help us to remember to seek it out when we need wisdom? Would You help us to read Your Word with the haste of David to course correct when we need to? Help us to never take for granted Your attention to detail in loving us through Your Word. We love You. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
