Happy Sunday, friend. As you prepare for worship this morning, let’s take a moment of quiet to invite God’s presence into your awareness today.
Today’s reading will be Psalm 119:129-144:
פ Pe
129 Your statutes are wonderful;
therefore I obey them.
130 The unfolding of your words gives light;
it gives understanding to the simple.
131 I open my mouth and pant,
longing for your commands.
132 Turn to me and have mercy on me,
as you always do to those who love your name.
133 Direct my footsteps according to your word;
let no sin rule over me.
134 Redeem me from human oppression,
that I may obey your precepts.
135 Make your face shine on your servant
and teach me your decrees.
136 Streams of tears flow from my eyes,
for your law is not obeyed.

137 You are righteous, Lord,
and your laws are right.
138 The statutes you have laid down are righteous;
they are fully trustworthy.
139 My zeal wears me out,
for my enemies ignore your words.
140 Your promises have been thoroughly tested,
and your servant loves them.
141 Though I am lowly and despised,
I do not forget your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is everlasting
and your law is true.
143 Trouble and distress have come upon me,
but your commands give me delight.
144 Your statutes are always righteous;
give me understanding that I may live.
Two specific things stuck out to me from these passages. One is verse 136:
136 Streams of tears flow from my eyes,
for your law is not obeyed.
I wonder if we’re sorrowful over the times the law of the Lord isn’t obeyed. Whether its in our own lives or in the world, there is disregard and often blatant disregard for God’s Word. But are we sorrowful over it? Do we let our hearts be affected when we’re not living the way we should?
The other is verse 139:
139 My zeal wears me out,
for my enemies ignore your words.
It goes right along with verse 136. Because of David’s passion for the law of God, he made himself exhausted being frustrated with those who didn’t share his love.
We live in a world full of people who don’t know God or follow His laws. We can’t expect people who don’t know and love God to keep to the same commands that we do, but we can let their separation from God break our hearts. It should make us sad to know how many people in our world don’t know the Lord. It should make us sad when we neglect God’s Word or choose our own ways over His. Reading these words of David’s convicts me for all the times when I’m content with following my own way and for all the times I fail to share God’s love with others.
I’m guessing you’re somewhat like me. It’s really easy to get up and sing God’s praises on Sunday morning, in a church full of people who are there for the same reasons I am, but it’s super difficult to be so bold outside the walls of the church. My prayer this week is that God will break our hearts for what breaks His and give us the boldness to proclaim Him as well on the streets as we do in our church buildings.
Let’s pray.
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
Thank You for the times when Your Word convicts us. I know I am convicted by these words of David, probably in ways he never intended when he was writing. Once again, you continue to show that this Bible we have is Your living and active Word. Help us to take hold of what was revealed today and to put it into action. Would You give us boldness? Would You give us hearts for those who are lost around us? Help us to live like we know You’re coming back and that our time here matters. We love you, God. Amen!
