Happy Sunday, friend. As you prepare for worship this morning, let’s take a moment of quiet to invite God’s presence into your awareness today.

I am not a morning person. In fact, I’ve often said church would probably be better if we could just wait until noon or later. On days when I’m feeling particularly weary of working for God, my early Sunday alarm can trigger a bad attitude as I get ready for church. Maybe you are a morning person and don’t quite understand that, but I think we all know what it’s like to feel weary and not have the best attitude to show up and serve on a Sunday morning. Sometimes that attitude is simply born out of our lack of spending time being with God. We do-ers can often misplace our focus on doing for God instead of being with Him. Yes, God has asked us to serve Him in tangible ways. More than anything, though, God has asked us to be with Him. To spend time with Him. To learn to live in His presence daily. And when our focus goes from being to doing, it’s easy for weariness and perhaps even some cynicism to slip in. Is your focus where it needs to be?

Paul reminds the church in Galatia:

9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Galatians 6:9-10

This harvest isn’t necessarily an earthly thing that we’re going to see. But our goal is to serve God because we love Him, not because we’re looking for the praise and favor of man. Not because we’re waiting for some signs of success on earth.

AW Tozer said, “The final test of love is obedience. Not sweet emotions, not willingness to sacrifice, not zeal, but obedience to the commandments of Christ. Our Lord drew a line plain and tight for everyone to see.”

We serve today because it’s our act of obedience. If your emotions aren’t there and you’re not feeling particularly zealous today, your obedience is still noticed. God sees you and He knows what you’re doing, even if no one else seems to notice. Focus on being with Him this morning and this next week and allow Him to work on those emotions.

Let’s pray.

God, you see each of us where we are today. Some of us are full of passion and zeal for You and Your church this morning. Others are struggling. God, we trust that You see our obedience and that You will work through it. Father, we ask for forgiveness for the times we let our service to You replace our relationship with You. Show us when that’s true of us and convict us of it. We come in obedience today, would You help our hearts to see You and respond accordingly today. Help our hearts to believe what we’re singing today. Help us to not grow weary of serving You, Lord. We know our reward is with You and we’d rather have Your favor over man’s any day. Work through us today, Lord. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
